Twenty Five

We had another meeting after breakfast the next morning.

We’d sent security droids over to bring the shuttles back, which made me wonder who was controlling them these days. Flying shuttles seemed above what they were supposed to be able to do, but well within what an AI could do. Bonko’s AI had once had control of them, but it was supposed to have let them go. But I guess it was possible that once an AI had controlled them, their programming was altered. Elsa didn’t even question it.

Once the cutters were removed, Unbound had docked with the main station. Camel was still there. I could have undocked and moved to Unbound, but I didn’t see the point. It would cost me a day’s docking fees, but in the scheme of things, that was nothing.

A good night’s sleep after some thinking about what we needed next, and some concern about how tired Brook looked, and I went into the meeting feeling good. Even my remaining bruises were no longer a problem for me. A few more days, and they’d hopefully be gone.

The first thing we did was share out the payments we’d received. The Ralnor funds moved to the Haven bank first, and then were converted into credits. From there we did the transfers to each of us. Even the ship crew getting a sixth of their share were, Elsa assured us, going to be very happy they’d bought in.

The ship share was so healthy now, it allowed us to think about spending credits on the company. And if it kept getting bigger like this, which I doubted, we might even eventually be able to sell our fighters back to the company. In the meantime, we had other things we could buy to consider.

I wasn’t the only one to come to the conclusion we should be getting more combat droids and suits. The combat suits had a secondary use which might be necessary in the future. Anything vaguely human shaped, or even torso sized, could be stuffed inside one, and thus evaced through hostile fire a lot quicker and safer. And as we’d seen already, they could do a lot with anything too heavy for either us or a combat droid to lift.

We had six, and decided to buy another twenty four. Six would live on Camel, and the rest on Unbound. It was also decided to buy another fifty combat droids, and the weapons and belt suits for them. So even without a marine unit, we could still take on the sort of mission we’d just completed.

Darren was concerned about the control aspect for them though, and said he’d look for any software upgrades available for them. I thought that was problematical, since the League normally used an AI to control them, but Darren seemed sure something better existed. He’d been right for other things, and if not, maybe the AI Nation would consider doing an upgrade for us anyway. It was paid work for them, so unlikely they’d turn it down.
